For the second time I’ve had this dream that I show up at the Ironman race without all of my stuff. And I’m not talking about one little thing – I show up without the essentials.
The first dream I showed up in sweats with my bike. I goofed around rather then setting up right away and with just a little bit of time left I went to set up. I opened my bag and all I had were arm and leg warmers. Did I mention I was in my sweats – which means I basically have running shoes and a hat. No swim gear, bike shoes/helmet, nutrition, etc. I had nothing. In the dream I rushed around and was able to buy some stuff (nothing in my size) but then I waited until the race started and I pilfered through everyone else’s stuff to get the rest of the gear that I needed. I ended up starting the race about 45 minutes after every one which was good in that I didn’t have to go through the mass start swim.
In last night’s dream, I was getting setting up in plenty of time and I kept wondering what I was missing as I was unpacking. Turns out it was my bike, all of my nutrition, and ironically, my arm and leg warmers (it was chilly and I needed them). I don’t know how this dream ended because I woke up in a panic and spent most of the rest of the night wondering if it would be too early to start packing now.
So seriously, can I start packing? I do have a list started already but I’m thinking I should start putting everything in my bag right now.
Any of you Ironman veterans reading this – is this normal????

I hope its normal, because I've had an ironman dream too. The swim took place on a flooded street, so it was only like 4 feet deep, and I got to the race late (avoiding the mass start as well).. and as I was trying to swim, some people from college got in my way and were trying to catch up on the last 4 years of my life. I got past them, and made the turn around cut off, but tripped down the stairs (yes, stairs in the middle of the swim). But I caught up to Matt Wolfe, and beat him into T1... only to find I didn't pack my helmet. They wouldn't let me ride without it, and my brother kept yelling at me "how stupid can you be to not pack your HELMET".
And then I woke up, and made sure "helmet" was on my ironman packing list. :)
Agh I have dreams like this before all my races!
Since I'm about to do my first marathon in February I keep having this dream where I show up with my old running shoes, brand-new, not-broken-in shoes, or with no shorts to wear. In one, I raced in jeans!
Hmmmm... the key is to be prepared. You'll probably have all sorts of anxiety before IM. It's normal. Yours just happens to vest itself in dreams. Very normal. For preps, make a list, check it twice (or thrice or more) with a detailed plan, and make sure you've got a handle on everything YOU can control. And plan for things that you cannot control and how you'll handle them. Who'd ever guess we'd have a monsoon last year at LP?
